As mentioned in a previous post, Cowboys player personnel director Eric DeCosta was in "Norris & Davis" this morning to discuss the NFL draft. He was also asked about Sergio Kindle and Terrence Cody--top two projects team picks up in April-and quarterback Joe Flacco.
DeCosta has made some interesting comments about Flacco in his interview with 105.7 The Fan Ed Norris and Steve Davis. But I was curious to see what he had to say about the Kindle and Cody, two players drafted GM Ozzie Newsome DeCosta were labeled as busts before the season even started last summer.
Kindle is a player who many are wondering about why he doesn't play at all last season after he fell down a flight of stairs the week before training camp. Then in December, he was charged with a DUI, a prison that put your career in jeopardy, but Ravens are giving you another chance to prove it.
DeCosta said he isn't sure if Cardinals will get anything from Kindle after the choice of second-rounder suffered a severe head injury during his July accident, but he thinks the linebacker is talented and "very hungry".
"Obviously, we had high expectations for it and we are very disappointed as things transpired," said DeCosta. "I'll tell you this: he has made progress. I had the chance to see him really work out in our facilities and it is getting better. And don't know what that means for the future. I am not a doctor and can't speak for our coaches and doctors, but know that Sergio is very hungry. He is obviously a very talented kid with a lot of ability to play the game of football. And if we somehow can take you out there that help our team much ".
When discussing how to spend time talent evaluators in the Scouting combine staring at perspectives in their underwear, subject of course changed to Cody, that doesn't look exactly like Adonis with his shirt off.
"Play [nose tackle] position, you have to be built a certain way," said DeCosta, referencing former Titans defensive quarterbacks Tony Siragusa and Sam Adams. "Gravity takes its toll, let's say. It helps to play down to the ground. Gravity type of collector you down and things are starting to sag and droop slightly.
Yes, just a bit.
DeCosta went on saying that Cody is a player that Bills are "very high".
"He ended the season very strong for us and made some large parts, especially in the game heads and we are very excited to see what he can do next year," he said.
Later, DeCosta was asked about Flacco, which was supported by John Harbaugh on "Norris & Davis" last week.
"I think he's probably one of the top 10 quarterbacks in League," said DeCosta. "I think it needs improving? Sure. But I do. Then get our coaches and our Scouts and people selling suites. Everybody does. He can play? Sure. We would like it to play better? Sure. But looking back on it, he is one of the best quarterbacks in the League. He is one of the elite guys? Probably not. It is Tom Brady or Peyton Manning? No.
"I saw Matt Cassel play against the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs. He was a Pro Bowl quarterback. And who would you rather have: Joe Flacco or Matt Cassel? Cassel is making $ 60 million this year. "
I don't know about you, but I'm talking Flacco, even if money is equal.
DeCosta said that while Flacco is "going to get better and better and better," the Ravens surround him with more talent, if they want to win another Lombardi Trophy.
"Not all our picks have criticized project, by right," said DeCosta. "And we need better players and when we have the best players around Joe Flacco, I think you'll see a quarterback better and you will see a time better and you will see a team that is able to go and beat Pittsburgh when we need to beat Pittsburgh and challenge for the Super Bowl.
